Zero-Waste Happy Hour – Poisson Blanc Adventure

The water is calm on the Lac du Poisson Blanc. Four canoes, nine girls. We paddle towards our island, the sun warming our skin, a little extra red glow as a bonus for those who had neglected the sunscreen! Soon after, the sky clouded over and the rain decided to beat down on us. But hey, it was still, perfect!

For this outing at Parc régional du Poisson Blanc, we had embarked on something very special. We had given ourselves the challenge of producing almost no waste. A jar of rubbish, that’s all!

With the reputation of cocktail queen already established, it was Pascale who was in charge of creating the zero-waste happy hour cocktails. Here are her best tips and recipes!

Preparation

It’s no secret for campers! Planning and preparation are key to a successful happy hour without any waste. Buying in bulk, planning the transport of food in the appropriate containers and making the right choices to minimize the amount of waste that is produced are habits to adopt when you’re aiming for zero waste.

Here is a list of what you will need for your happy hour cocktails:

  • Mason jar or camping mug/cup
  • Oshlag gin (glass bottle to recycle once back in your area)
  • Candied citrus
  • Mint & basil leaves
  • Sparkling water (using a Soda Stream)
  • Infused simple syrup (recipe below)

Ingredients of Choice

– Citrus & Herbs –

We quickly think to ourselves, “I can throw my lemon in the woods, it’s a fruit after all!” But no! This sweet lemon does not compost in a few days and is still considered waste.

A simple solution to reduce your plant waste? Mix in the citrus. Lemons are delicious to taste and add a nice punch of flavour. Use citrus juice before candying the peels. It can be added to drinks!

Individual plastic sacks or containers of herbs are better to be avoided. So we brought our little basil plant, literally! A little trick? To keep it longer when you return home, put the plant in a bowl and pour water every day (yes, yes!) directly into the bowl.

-Sparkling Water-

Tonic water or sparkling water usually comes in a bottle or a can so it’s hard to avoid unnecessary waste! This is the reason why we have chosen to invest in a device that makes it possible to produce sparkling water in reusable bottles.

-Alcohol Choice-

With so many great OSHLAG products to choose from, we opted for the Dentdelion Gin and the Hibiscus Gin. Both glass bottles are recyclable in most regions.
